All, We have been experimenting with pigz (a parallel version of gzip which exploits multiple cores) to try and reduce the amount of time taken when backing up DLEs using software compression (gzip). We've had encouraging results, with the backup taking roughly half the time.
Unfortunately, the performance boost is cold comfort when you are unable to restore from such a backup: 1234812125.268356: amidxtaped: tape: files[402] = 403 1234812125.268369: amidxtaped: tape: files[403] = 404 1234812125.268383: amidxtaped: current tapefile_idx = 0 1234812129.843354: amidxtaped: Device /dev/IBMtape1n error = 'EOF' pigz: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated Error writing fd 5: Broken pipe Error writing fd 5: Broken pipe Has anybody had any experience of trying to use mgzip, pigz, or similar parallel bzip compression?
