Found it, and now that my memory has been jogged, I recall a problem a month ago. It turned out that while /amandatapes/Dailys/data was owned by amanda:amanda, the underlying slot9 had somehow become owned by root:root. Fixed. flush is done. Aka false alarm. Sorry for the noise.
