Hello,

I have been trying to get Amanda to work for me for the past few months, and
continue to succeed up until the time comes to back up actual data onto real
tapes. I have the Amanda server configured, a couple of clients set up, disk
list entries made, etc. and all works well when testing. I was able to back up
the /var/log directories of three systems successfully, but whenever I try to
back up any data of any consequence, the report I receive states that the dump
failed:

FAILURE DUMP SUMMARY:
   amandaclient.domain.local /var/lib/postgresql/backup lev 1 FAILED [too
many taper retries]
   amandaclient.domain.local /var/lib/postgresql/backup lev 1: partial taper:
No space left on device

I have a hard time believing that this is the case, since the directory in
question is only 225 megabytes in size, and I am trying to back it up onto an
80 gigabyte HP DAT-160 cartridge. As such, I checked some log files to see if
I could find more information.

Running dmesg on the Amanda server give a bit more information, though nothing
that I personally find useful:

mt reports that the tape device (/dev/nst0) is at block 1, so I can't imagine
that it is actually full. This occurs on every tape I try. amdevcheck always
reports SUCCESS before I run amdump.

I can't seem to find much information about problems similar to this on the
web. I found a few hits that were several years old, suggesting upgrading tar,
recompiling Amanda, and of course the standard hardware diagnostics (RAM, hard
disk, etc), all of which I have done as applied. If anyone can please assist
me in tracking down and correcting this problem, I would very much appreciate
it. I just had an issue with some lost data, and I'd really like to get these
tape backups working so I can sleep again.

Some other useful information:

Amanda 2.6.1_p2 (also used 2.6.0_p2 with the same effect)
Gentoo Linux, Kernel 2.6.31-r10 (also used 2.6.31-r6 with same effect. Will be
upgrading to 2.6.32-r7 shortly)
tar (GNU tar) 1.20
HP DAT 160 USB Tape Drive (tapes are HP DAT 160 Data Cartridge C8011A)

I can make my amanda.conf, etc. files available if necessary; this message
seems long enough already without them.
