I have used both aproaches, largely depending on how long I
think the dump will take and how much of the tape I think we
are likely to consume.

I'm also more likely to run a complete dump initially for 'new'
services where the server is just being put online and there is
still data/services being migrated to it. As when we started to
migrate all of the user home directories to a new platform and
the old platform was still in production.

In Thomas' case I'd be more likely to stage things as Jon suggested
as we already know you are pushing limits on tape capacity and the
work area has not yet been implemented.
