Is there a URL for instructions on how to do this?

And, will it affect my ability to recover from backups made using the
present .amandahosts way?

In other words, are these changes backwards compatible?

If "No" is the case, where I would be locked out of recovering anything
backed up before the changes, then perhaps I'll have to re-think my
options. It would take a trouble-free 30 days to bring the whole archive
into compliance with a new, non-compatible method.

Thanks Jean-Louis.

Ok, I'm just uploading the new version of the kernel, v1.3.33, also
known as "the buggiest kernel ever".
