Turns out that error can be ignored (would also be a great fact to add to the walkthrough). Was able to back up and restore a test directory successfully with amdump despite this error. Took longer than 15 mins, but I the important part is that I got it working. :) Next job is trying to figure out how feasible it is to use Amazon S3 as a storage location for Amanda.
