Hello,

We've been successfully running Amanda 3.3.2 on Solaris 10 x86 for
some time (10/09 s10x_u8wos_08a). We are using a Sun SL500 library
with 2 HP LTO-4 drives connected via fibre-channel. The most recent
tape drive firmware update from HP (H64S) has caused our setup to stop
working. When Amanda tries to load a tape it ends up with an I/O
error from trying to read the header and we are not able to read or
write to the tape. This is the case with any tape we try to load.
The problem goes away if we revert back to the previous version of the
firmware and we have been staying on that version of the firmware so
our system works.

We've been working extensively with Oracle support and sending them
various drive information dumps and system logs. They cannot
determine the problem. Can anyone on this list offer any suggestions?
It is not my opinion that Amanda is the problem but we have explored
many other avenues and everyone involved is completely baffled.

Here is an example of reproducing the problem manually. I can do this
with any tape in our library, and the same tapes are fine if we put
the drives on the older firmware.
 ~$ amtape umatlas slot 31
slot 31: Could not open device: Can't open tape device /dev/rmt/2: I/O error
changed to slot 31

MT status after this happens:

~$ mt -f /dev/rmt/2 status
HP Ultrium LTO 4 tape drive:
   sense key(0x6)= Unit Attention residual= 0 retries= 0
   file no= 0 block no= 0

MT status, second run after I wait about 10 seconds:

 ~$ mt -f /dev/rmt/2 status
HP Ultrium LTO 4 tape drive:
   sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense residual= 0 retries= 0
   file no= 0 block no= 0

Thanks very much for any suggestions. If additional information is
needed I am happy to provide.

regards,
Ben
