This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but we had a situation with our
LTO-2 drive where apparently the head-cleaning cartridge wasn't cleaning
(though it acted normally when inserted).  We were getting end-of-tape
errors on our tapes with much less data than expected, in spite of
various attempts to figure out what was wrong -- until we tried a new
cleaning cartridge and suddenly tape capacities were more or less back
to normal....
