I've been quiet, mostly because our amanda installs have been working
just fine....

I just updated a machine to amanda 3.3.1 (slightly old I know) via
pkgsrc, which as far as I know builds amanda pretty normally.

The amanda.conf has:

tapedev "/dev/nrst0"

which is a file in /dev:

crw-rw---- 1 root operator 14, 1 Mar 23 11:15 /dev/nrst0

I get

ERROR: chg-single: error opening device '/dev/nrst0': "/dev/nrst0" is not a
valid device name.

whereas this config worked fine with amanda 2.5.x. This is jsut the
raw, nonrewinding first scsi tape drive, and it's pretty normal:

st0 at scsibus0 target 6 lun 0: <CERTANCE, ULTRIUM 2, 1914> tape removable
st0 : drive empty
st0: sync (12.50ns offset 127), 16-bit (160.000MB/s) transfers

I also tried putting "tape:/dev/nrst0" as the tapedev, and moving that
to a device definition, but neither of those succeeded.

I am finding the changer docs and the code a bit confusing. Surely just
using a single tape drive is normal.

Any clues would be appreciated.

Greg
