I'm not sure what might have changed to start your problems, but
usually tar does not follow links within the DLE (but instead simply
backs up the symlinks themselves), as well as not crossing over to
other filesystems.

So, in the case of localhost:/srv/backups , it would be interesting to
see the output of commands like:

  ls -l /srv/backups/*
  ls -l /tank/backups
  df /tank/backups/*
