I have to configure the following setup and would like to hear your
recommendations or thoughts:

amanda-3.3.9 on a small but solid server, dumping backups to a single
HP-DAT-160 tape drive. Yes, old/small/slow.

So the customer asked if we could play it cheap and buy 2 external
USB-disks (2 TB size each) and somehow spread the backups over tapes and
disks.

The initial thought was that there should be disk1 attached to the
server in uneven weeks (1,3,5, ...) and disk2 in even weeks (2,4,6, ...)
and the "cold" disk be taken offsite in the meantime.

The people there know *nothing* of amanda, so the setup has to be as
stupid as possible ;-)

Which means I have to think and plan more.

I think of setting up udev rules to detect which of the 2 disks is
attached, and then running vtapes on both of them.

Now comes the part where my expertise is limited:

I would prefer to have one single amanda config around the 2 usb-disks,
maybe even managing the tapes as well.

Would RAIT make sense here?
Should I amvault dumps from here to there?
How to deal with vtapes "not attached"?

I think some of you have already set up similar configs so I ask for
some feedback on how to start that and what to consider and avoid.

Looking forward, thanks, Stefan
