I think the 15 min install doc is dated and not or poorly maintained.

amanda-client.conf is a "relatively" recent addition.  In there tape-dev
can be defined to allow recovery of backups on the client machine.  You
need to tell it the server and which device to recover from.  For small
installations like mine, it probably is not needed.  And if you recover
on the server then transfer to the client, it is not needed either.

By staging, I presume you refer to the "holding disk".  It does have
several benefits, particularly if going to real tape.  Amanda was
developed for tape backup and later added "virtual tapes".  You can
backup directly to the storage device, but as tape drives can only
handle one stream at a time, you can only be backing up 1 DLE.  With
a holding disk you can backup multiple DLEs simultaneously.

Some sites use a separate network from the amanda server to the NAS.
