The next step was to get amcheck running. I had two steps here:

* Set up amanda-security.conf correctly. To do that, I added the line
  below to it, per

  tcp_port_range=512,1023

* get /home/amandabackup/.amandahosts set up correctly. I followed on
  from the debian packages, and made it a symlink to /etc/amandahosts,
  with suitable ownership and permissions. The relevant portion of
  the script now looks like:

  cp -rp /etc/amandahosts /etc/amandahosts~
  echo localhost amandabackup amdump >> /etc/amandahosts
  chown ${amUser}:${amGroup} /etc/amandahosts
  chmod 600 /etc/amandahosts

  # Link them....
  ln -s /etc/amandahosts /home/amandahosts/.amandahosts

With that, I seem to have gotten a decent backup. Woo hoo!
