Which log files are getting put there?  The "logdir" setting in
amanda.conf controls where the "amdump.*" and "log.*" files get put, and
seems to default to being under /etc/amanda.

(I agree with you, and edit my amanda.conf file to set "logdir" to be
"/var/log/amanda/CONFIG" instead.)
