I used vaulting once, to move backups to a different (new) machine which
had incompatible storage units (tape drive).
As far as I could tell, amvault is basically just making a copy of the
dump files BUT while telling amanda about them, so she knows about these copies.
You fiddle and figure out the correct flags to do it.
The easier technique, if amanda need not know about the copies, is to just
copy
them. Or rsync them. That’s IDEA #1 above.
If you are content with using non-amanda commands (dd, tar, recover, etc)
then IDEA #1 is easiest.
IDEA #2 makes more work for you (amvaulting so amanda knows about the copy)
PLUS amanda still will not know about the copy you have rsync’ed to home.
So you still have to recover manually. Or possibly put the files back exactly
to where they were synced from.
I vote for IDEA # !
