The crash seems related to the Contextview (the central element in the default layout) Likely due to some plasmoid or a "broken" plasmoid configuration (invalid values, whatever) Have you filed a bugreport including a backtrace? If not, this is just about the first thing you should do, because "works, crashes, i remove a config -> works, crashes later on" is not a good source to investigate on but rather as informative as "He's dead, Jim!" ;-)
The playback issue might be related, might be not. Maybe a missing codec, maybe a general Phonon issue, maybe your speakers aren't turned on =) When talking about the "progressbar" and "time indicator" you mean some items in the context view or the two things in the toolbar (or one/one)? Does it (temporarily) "fix" with removing the mentioned config file as well?
