The quick answer is that amavisd-new/SA is a tool.  A building block.
If an appliance vendor solves your management problem, than you will
have time to work on other issues.
An appliance vendor MAY be better at stopping spam also, depending on
their ability to understand and change based on your business needs.

As an example:  we use amavisd-new/SA as the last stage in an appliance,
being able to block most of the spam prior to the amavisd-/SA filter.

Does it stop more spam than SA?  I think so,
Is it easier to manage than amavisd-new/SA?  Users think so ;

Pick one that is supported in your country, that has the management
capabilities you require.
It will make your life easier and your users should be happy with the
management and report improvements.
