It probably doesn't have anything to do with amavisd-new.  It sounds like
the squirrelmail feature to block external image links.  You should have a
"View unsafe images" link at the bottom of each message where external
image references have been blocked by Squirrelmail.  If you explain to
your users that external image links are blocked by default to help reduce
their spam, they may be happy to click the link.  Otherwise, look at the
"Unsafe Image Rules" squirrelmail plugin for a way to allow images to
appear by default in some cases.
