Uhm, I'd put that to 1 instead. And reload amavisd-new.

Also, modify Postfix's master.cf in order to reflect the change:

smtp      inet  n       -       n       -       1       smtpd -o
                content_filter=smtp-amavis:[127.0.0.1]:10024

Don't forget to issue "postfix reload"

If your amavisd-new loglevel is 2 or higher, monitor processing times as root (perhaps loglevel=1 also reports this, dunno):

tail -f /var/log/maillog | grep TIMING

or

tail -f /var/log/maillog | grep TIMING | sed 's/ - .*//'
