I have debian stable system with than configuration:

exim4-heavy 4.50-8
amavisd-new 20030616p10-5
clamav-daemon 0.88-0volatile1
spamc 3.0.3-2

dual Xeon 2GHz, 1GB RAM, SCSI320 disk (with noatime for spool and temp
partitions)

it looks like this:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 2098 amavis 20 10 37500 30m 14m R 41.7 3.5 0:32.66 amavisd-new
30285 amavis 17 10 37868 31m 13m R 37.9 3.6 1:33.07 amavisd-new
30507 amavis 18 10 36336 30m 14m R 37.9 3.5 1:30.43 amavisd-new
29294 amavis 20 10 36972 31m 13m R 34.1 3.5 1:55.25 amavisd-new
 1907 amavis 17 10 36040 30m 14m R 24.6 3.4 0:01.56 amavisd-new
28072 amavis 10 0 22396 21m 1336 S 7.6 2.5 0:02.39 clamd
 3068 root 13 0 1004 1004 752 R 7.6 0.1 0:00.08 top
    1 root 7 0 512 512 456 S 0.0 0.1 0:04.35 init

what may cause that, why amavis eating CPU while clamd and spamd works
fine with minimal resources? is it worth to upgrade system to
etch/testing (with amavisd-new 1:2.3.3-8)?

thank you.
