Mark may want to correct me here, but AFAIK, amavisd-new relies on another
MTA to do relay control and has no mechanism of its own (among about
fifty other things a true MTA has that amavisd-new does not). Although
it behaves like a MTA, it is not designed to be a full fledged standalone
SMTP server that is subject to the horrors of a direct connection to the
Internet, it is designed to be a content filter that interfaces with an
existing internally administered MTA. The closest thing to putting it in
front of a server would be using it as a 'before queue' proxy filter in
Postfix (or similar mechanism with other MTAs), but even this is not
recommended or supported. More details about your setup and the
problem you are trying to solve may provide enough clues for someone
to provide an alternative recommendation.
