In that case, adding $status to your output of your script, will allow you
to met your goal of not ignoring the reported error response:

          if [ $status -ne 1 ]
         then
                 echo "ERROR: SA-update appears to have failed."
         fi 

Becomes:

          if [ $status -ne 1 ]
         then
                 echo "ERROR: SA-update appears to have failed: ($status)."
         fi
