ClamAV is quite good on current viruses, especially phishing attacks - sometimes even faster in the update than the notorious fast kaspersky team. However, the clam people -as far as I understand it - concentrateon current viruses. Older viruses are not normally detected. Same is true for Office macro viruses. So probably a combination of ClamAV and a commercial scanner is a good idea.
