I'm starting amavisd-new from the debian initscript, so did you mean to add to the initscript? Even starting amavis as below doesn't fix the problem (as per the perlio page:http://perldoc.perl.org/PerlIO.html) : mail:/etc/amavis# PERLIO=perlio amavisd-new And the perlio page indicates that an unset PERLIO environment variable defaults to 'stdio' in Perl 5.8.
