So far it appears the problem only seems to happen when using tcp sockets. I would rather see you switch to Unix sockets (if clamd is on the same machine as amavisd-new) and continue running clamd as clamav than switch to running as amavis. Running as amavis makes upgrades via apt very time consuming. Plus, there are a number of things that need to be changed in order to to run as amavis, some not obvious.
