I'm running a fairly typical postfix->amavisd (spamassassin, virus scan)
-> postfix -> next mail hop dedicated filtering system. Most of the
time everthing is working fine, but amavisd is hanging every few days.

amavis logs are showing nothing - they just completely stop logging.

the first problems apparent in the postfix logs are as follows (amavisd
is on port 10024):

Sep 23 04:47:18 xxxxx.ryerson.ca postfix/smtp[1827]: [ID 197553
mail.info] 171B
5558A: to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
relay=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]:10024, d
elay=300, delays=0.29/0/300/0, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (conversation
with xxx
.xxx.xxx.xxx[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] timed out while receiving the initial
server greet
ing)

I see a handful of these (fewer than my $max_servers number), followed
by a large break in my postfix logs (the amavis logs show no logging
after 04:42).  Then:

Sep 23 05:04:50 xxxxx.ryerson.ca postfix/error[3593]: [ID 197553
mail.info] 171B5558A: to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, relay=none, delay=1353,
delays=1353/0/0/0.03, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (delivery temporarily
suspended: conversation with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] timed out
while sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once)

I get a pile of "timed out while sending end of data" and then it goes
back to "timed out while receiving the initial server greeting" again.
A direct telnet to amavisd on 10024 at this point gets me a connection,
but no banner back from amavisd.

Restarting amavisd normally gets mail flowing again, though sometimes a
postfix reload also seems to be required.

Thoughts on what I should be looking for here? Messages in amavis/tmp
during the "hang" can be virus scanned or spamassassin'd manually
without troubles.

jonathan.
