D'oh! <smacks forehead>... He uses mutt, which I doubt would be so stupid.
But thanks to breaking my focus off the gateways, I remembered that his
actual mailbox is on an Exchange server (accessed via IMAP) -- in
hindsight, the evil Microsoft product should have been my first suspect,
but he told me it was the gateway doing it and I foolishly started there.

I confirmed via packet sniffing that what we're feeding to the Exchange
server is kosher; it must be doing the munging.

Sorry to bother the list, but I appreciate the help to get my head straight
:)...
