Hi,
I am running a similar setup with sendmail on CentOS5, which is almost the
same as RHEL5.1
However I am not using clamscan but the daemonized version clamd, and that
has worked very well so far. You just have to make sure that the users
running amavisd and clamd are the same.
clamav has a much newer version than the one you are using, which might be
the reason.
