I've fixed the default config for the next Ubuntu release and intend to upload 
an update for 
8.10 (Intrepid) shortly.  I'd appreciate it if you would keep an eye on the bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/amavisd-new/+bug/306889

and verify it is fixed after installing from intrepid-proposed (there will 
be a comment in the bug when it is available for testing).
