These are quite different mechanisms, it's hard to compare their merits. AWL is just an averaging mechanism, penpals can rescue a mail (a reply) in an ongoing conversation. Besides, the SQL log data (same as used by pen pals) is also used by a bounce killer feature, rescuing genuine bounces and ditching bounces to mail with faked sender address. If the pen pals mechanism can save a few messages per day from being declared spam, I'd say it fulfills its task for me. The amavisd-agent can report these events, look for: PenPalsSavedFromKill PenPalsSavedFromTag2 in its report.
