I've seen similar issues with Postfix + amavisd-new 2.5.4. Upon a reload of amavisd-new Postfix no longer can connect to amavisd-new but I am able to telnet manually and connect to amavisd-new. Postfix is unable to connect until I issue a restart on the service. The behavior does not occur on every reload of amavisd-new. I am still working on a resolution for my situation.
