yes, I put a clamd on a different host, and backup scan with that.  (its 
over a vpn, so, no privacy issues) and in fact, its on a different 
network most of the time.

as for av_smtp, I guess I misunderstood the -pre13 readme file:

- updated (rarely used) AV entries 'Sophos SAVI', 'Mail::ClamAV'
   and 'av_smtp' in an incompatible way (they now use ask_daemon interface
   instead of a dedicated subroutine), please update your AV entries;
