This is an unusual setup. May I ask why? The reason I'm asking is because an 
SMTP server in front would cut down on that traffic.

In Amavis. And I don't have postfix or any other SMTP server as first receiver 
before amavis. Amavis is the frontend server.
It's version is 2.10.1 on a dDebian Jessie.
