I don't know who told you that.
It's true that using smtp_proxy, but using amavisd through amavisd-milter is
great for rejecting spam at SMTP level.
It's not advised for scanning mail received from your users, because such
scanning can take long enough so users will complain.

I can only recommend. Users are in some cases already blocked by postscreen,
if you use it (e.g. when connecting from addreses in dynamic blacklists),
so they really must use alternative ports, and if receiving mail from server
takes a minute or two - the server doesn't care.
