Dear Ambit folks

This email is generally of interest to those making sound work - be it music
or whatever - however I have to say that because of this list i did attend
Cavan's rocket making workshop yesterday at the Edinburgh Royal Observatory
and it was brilliant. I want to make another one....(!)

I think it's great (for me especially) to see so many people asking about
sound but I also agree with other comments on this list that debate should
be brief and responses short.

But can I ask that people posting messages put accurate subject headings as
to what the mail is about - that's basic list etiquette and makes the list
work best, I reckon. like most people, I am on a few different lists and no
one likes to spend all day trying to work out if a message is relevant.

OK, and now a longer message on sound stuff.

1. Someone was asking about are their any lap top folks out there making
sound in this way ?

Sure, ME ! I worked with loads of other great folks via the net (Frank
Bretschneider / janek Schaefer / Smyglyssna / Third Eye Foundation) from
electro-acoustic to dance to sound art to contemporary mouse music, to
academic wank, you name it ! I am delighted there are others on the llist
doing this also.

Well I am a musician on www.bip-hop.com (buy my new album ! go on !!!) and I
use a whole host of packages on the Mac platform. I use a lot of dsp stuff
within bias PEAK and PLUGGO effects in Cubase and my soft sampler is the
fantastic HALion on Cubase. I have millions of soft synths and samplers and
started out mainly with shareware for the lot before I went and bought
packages. This is not always the kit list of choice from cold austere
electronic heids. I have interest in REAKTOR / MAX and so on, having worked
a little with Autechre and SND in Sheffield - both of whom are purists in
this way. But i don't want to spend all day programming - I think the best
software is the often the simplest (or simplest designed) - I mean, I am a
funded artist who uses IMOVIE !!! most people don't believe this when I tell
them that - even though I trained on much more complex systems, but IMOVIE
is extremely limited and I think less choice = more freedom, more clarity
and focus for a project personally. It's not ideal for everything and is
useless for a lot, but regarding sound stuff, DSoundpro is a great FREE mac
sampler and it's fantastic. I like to think i abuse software rather than
have people sneer at the fact I am a cubase user - it's what you do with it
that counts...

2. Laptop Composition

I am a big fan of Mego style Vienniese stuff but am getting a bit bored of
that now. I suppose the current laptop classic is Fennesz's ENDLESS SUMMER
which is a flawed masterpiece of sorts. I have a G3 and G4 - my G3 is the
black variety and I currently learning STEIM's LiSa live sampling
application on it. STEIM is based in Amsterdam and I have been invited to
perform there recently. I am currently developing ideas to turn my
recordings into live works so if anyone is interested in a laptop jam,
preferably in Edinburgh then let me know !

Basically I am a sound collaborator and have made works with loads of
others, but am now getting fed up with glitch culture...so that's me.
