Hello, this is a message from David Mudie of the angus digital media centre. I have just received your e-mail and have visited your website. Very interesting indeed. I thought I'd get back to you with some details of the Centre as this may be of interest to you.

ADMC is a brand new open access media production facility located in Brechin, near Forfar. It is a joint public and private partnership which was conceived and established by Angus Council in conjunction with the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund and East of Scotland European Partnership, as well as sponsorship from Macmillan UK Ltd and Mediaspec. The Centre's patron is Alan Cumming.

We are offering access to state-of-the-art production facilities in video, animation and mutli-media which includes five public access AVID suites, one higher-end AVID (all with Boris), DigiDesign ProTools 24 mix sound studio (hard and software), a large multifunctional 120 seat auditorium with VHS, DV, DVD data projection and surround sound for cinema exhibition, TV/video production, sound recording and conferencing.

The multimedia comprises of two Dells running Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Fireworks & Director. The animation suite is connected to a 3D scanner and is running 3D Studio Max (hopefully Maya soon too). Other facilities include a G4 Mac suite running Final Cut Pro and another G4 running ProTools Digidesign 8 mix (with Final Cut Pro), a meeting room, gallery space, DVD output, full lighting and audio location kits & full range of cameras (right up to highest-end DVCAM [Digibeta compatible]).

Audio and Video production suites can be patched to each other, auditorium and control room.

ADMC offers training, conducted by core staff and visiting industry specialists in, digital photography, computer graphics, multimedia, animation, web design, scripting, AVID/Final Cut Pro editing, studio and location sound, digital sound, lighting, directing and producing.

ADMC offers access to hire and production facilities via a four tier system with rates for concession, individuals, groups and commercial clients.

I hope you find all of this interesting and may find it helpful. I personally was working with DCA Jan - Aug 2000 in cinema outreach with Mairi Thomas, who I'm sure you know, and am therefore wondering if we've already met?

I've organised an open night here at ADMC for Sat 20th, October with a coach leaving DCA at 7.30pm (returning for 11pm) why not try to get along, tickets 2 and available form DCA box office under Moving Image Forum event.

Please feel free to contact me at any time and pass this info on to anyone you think might be interested.

All the best
David Mudie

Subject: Re: <ambit>introduction- access- location

Yes, I got the fifty orso emails.
Good to get it together with this list.

For those who don’t know me: I’m a video and sound installation artist & currently moving into the live sound/movement performance direction. At the beginning of next year, I’m doing a short development period at STEIM in Amsterdam. Also just finished a residency in St. Andrews at the Crawford Art Centre where I was making new work for a solo show in the Intermedia Gallery in Glasgow next April, combining sculpture, video and sound.

In term of issues raised:

Access is important ofcourse, though I do do think that the role of access centres has changed and with lots of technology becoming more affordable, more people will have their own equipment at home, especially those who know they’ll need the same equipment all the time. For people who are just moving into using new media/video/sound, access centres are more vital in terms of production. But then there is a sociable function and it can be a place to see other peoples work and give and get feedback on it. It's also interesting that with all the technology becoming more mobile, we are less bound to one location full stop and the rural digital nomad village-tent does have it's attractions. For me personally though wired communication is never going to be able to replace meeting people 'in the flesh' until technology catches up with our ideas and more intuivive ways of communication. As an add-on it's great though.
