For those of us not lucky enough to be going to Transmediale, I thought I
might suggest another discussion topic and make a related announcement.

net.radio, streaming audio are once again back on the artistic agenda. The
emergence of the mp3 format, made famous by Napster (remember that?) led to
a proliferation of internet radio stations, often run by enthusiasts and
hobbyists and created subsequent controversy over proprietary formats for
distributing sound and music. The more recent development of the first open
source audio streaming format, Ogg Vorbis, has been highlighted by a new
project by radioqualia, see my other posting.

What are the potentials of net audio? Does it complete the creative 'loop'
started by audio sampling technologies in the 1980's? How does it differ
from other modes of distrbution such as broadcast radio or recordings?
What's your favourite project utilising this form?

I must declare some self-interest in this. New Media Scotland are in the
process of setting up a streaming media server, and we plan to start
occasional projects, initially using streaming audio only. I'd like to take
this opportunity to invite fellow ambiteers to get in touch with ideas for
projects you would like to realise using the potentials of live and/or
pre-recorded streaming audio. Make your own radio programme, do a live
audio performance, DJ across the net, whatever you'd like to do we are open
to suggestions.

Technical details: Currently we are looking at mp3 and Ogg Vorbis codecs
for streaming via the Icecast and Shoutcast server platforms. Quicktime is
also being investigated. If these terms mean nothing to you, no need to
worry.
