Apologies for another (hopefully I'll get a warning before I'm flung out)
slighly OT posting from me.

Picking up on Decembers topic of the month....Moves are afoot to establish
by scottish galleries a communal emailing list for near definitive listings
of artists opportunities and events.

ambiteers are particularly well placed to advise on this topic, and I think
most of you have an interest in how to least painfully facilitate your works
being seen more by audiences wider than your fellow new media practictioners
and theorists.

I was at a meeting of Glasgow gallery managers/promoters this week called by
Variant magazine.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss/develop this proposal from Leigh
French

<
"Proposal:
To establish a single, free, collective e-mailing group between the
contemporary galleries in Scotland, consisting of national & international
arts organisations, artists, press, etc.

Each organisation would have access to the group-lists data-base and be
able to send info. to all those subscribed to the list. The list would
require consent from those asked to subscribe (for free) thereby negating
any potential problems of database protection, confidentiality, spamming
etc. Galleries would collectively update the list & remove bounced
addresses.

Such a list could encourage the use by other galleries perhaps with lesser
resources or time to participate. It would also facilitate the free-flow of
information and could form a strong element in national & international
promotions. Publicity information to be sent to people you wished to remain
confidential could still be mailed out privately - funders, sponsors, etc.."
>

sorry, didnt' think to forward the invitation to the meeting(which I guess
kind of illustrates the point), another one is promised for Edinburgh soon
(details will follow).

Content is King?

It may be that some of you are well placed in offering technical advice on
evaluating different services and systems of newsgroup/newservers(any
volunteers?) . However I feel that establishing a consensus on the aims and
properties of the list is initially more important.

Those who wish to register views but are either unable to attend meetings or
formulate a full written response, may wish to consider expressing their
thoughts in the simple format below of specifying "essential" & "desirable"
properties of such a collective list
i.e. please complete and return the following.....

the new list MUST DO this
1.
2.
3.

the new list should do this
1.
2.
3.

the new list MUST NOT do this
1.
2.
3.

the new list should NOT do this
1.
2.
3.

(3 is just a suggested number - comments, questions and links equally
welcomed)

& please remember not to click reply unless your message to go to all of the
list
