Hi all,
A long overdue intro from myself and my collaborator / co-curator Nina Pope
to the list & apologies for lurking so long! We have worked together
since '95 on diverse new media, live, public and gallery projects - our site
at www.somewhere.org.uk has comprehensive documentation as well as site-
specific work by us. We both studied at E.C.A and our first 2 collaborations
happened in Scotland - Somewhere Over the TV at the Collective in Edinburgh
('95) and A Hypertext Journal ('96) a live interactive retracing of Boswell &
Johnston's Scottish tour. We now work in London and Cumbria.
Recently our collaboration has branched out to curation under the name of
Somewhere and we went in at the deep end with TV swansong, 8 commissions
culminating in a one-off live webcast on 20.03.02. Each project looks at TV's
past, present and future and the works range from live site-specific public
events (such as Hamilton & Rogers' Generic Sci-Fi Quarry - a
projection /sound piece with former members of BBC Radiophonic Workshop in a
working Oxfordshire quarry) to a children's TV art competition (Jessica
Voorsanger's project)to a webcam ballroom dance event in Blackpool Tower
(Giorgio Sadotti). The project has taken 2 years to develop and fundraise for
and has been an opportunity for many artists 'new to new media' (!) to work
with the skills and networks Nina and I have developed in our own practice ,
and that we wanted to see in an ambitious, independent project which didn't
get cornered into 'new media'....Access to the webcast will be from any
computer with Real Media software, and a network of many galleries and public
spaces are offering free public access across the UK.
Anyway, enough said except log on to www.swansong.tv and give us your
feedback!
All the best,
Karen Guthrie
