on the surface this looks as scary as it does inevitable. but when you
consider that everquest now lists among the 'real world's richest
countries - and see how active online communities such as those found in
lambdaMOO have become in governing their own virtual affairs - it is
something that has to be considered as a real contender for proactive
community capacity building. if people are more apt to speak their mind in a
virtual environment (which definitely seems to be the trend), why not
embrace that into the governing systems of 'real life'? the fact that it is
big media businesses that are taking the lead on this for their own dismal
interests should not detract from the core ideas of blurring borders between
real and virtual lives and what it takes to make a society responsible for
its own workings.
