He will talk about his work from the 70s to the present day, introduce each film and video in the programme (on 13th and 14th only) and show work in progress extracts from his new film 'Worst Case Scenario' (on 13 June only). John Smith has been making films and videos since 1972. Structural film was at its peak in the mid-70s when he made his first films as part of the movement's 'second wave'. These films can be enjoyed as stories, films for everyone, especially in their humour. Rejecting structures that suggest fixed power, he celebrates ordinary things. At a deeper level, he constructs little narratives but undermines all human structuers by breaking up the sequences of images and sounds. 'Smith's most original hallmark is the use of humour to evoke but also to question film narrative' (AL Rees) An exhibition of films, videotapes and installations by John Smith was recently held at Pearl Projects in London. A new publication 'John Smith - Film and Video Works 1972 - 2002' (published by Picture This Moving Image/Watershead Media Centre) will be available during the programme at CCA.
