Nicolas Collins offers a workshop in two vintage pieces of Diskless
Jockeying; John Cage's 'Cartridge Music' and Nicolas Collins' 'Devil's
Music'. Participants will prepare their own version of the Cage score
and perform it using phono cartridges and contact microphones that they
make themselves. They will also perform an extended set of 'Devil's
Music' variations using software that emulates its rusting hardware.
These workshops are ideal for musicians and DJs however no specific
musical skills are required.
In 1938 John Cage composed the world's first piece of music for live DJ
('Imaginary Landscape'). Twenty years later he ripped the needle out of
the record player and transformed it into a versatile musical
instrument, and the non-musician into a virtuoso performer. 'Cartridge
Music' (1960) uses phono cartridges and contact mikes to amplify tiny
sounds to huge volumes, participants create their own score from Cage's
'kit' of transparent overlays, collect objects to amplify, and perform
together as an electronic orchestra.
Nicolas Collins' 'Devil's Music' emerged in 1985 out of the confluence
of his fascination with early hip-hop DJs, a love of the Cagean
splendour of radio, ElectroHarmonix's introduction of the first
affordable, portable samplers, and a simple home-made 'stuttering
circuit'. The performer sweeps the radio dial in search of suitable
material to sample, loop, layer, re-trigger, reverse, de-tune and
re-rhythmitize. Collins has recently recreated 'Devils Music' with
groups of local DJs in Berlin and Karlsruhe.
