GUARDIANS OF DOUBT

R&D COMMISSION OPPORTUNITY
A DANCE RESEARCH PROJECT FOR A NON - DANCER OR CHOREOGRAPHER

An opportunity for a non-dance artist, resident in the UK, to reconfigure his or her creative process within a dance context. Open to all artists, except dancers or choreographers, a single award of 4000 is available to enable the artist to leap out of their own artistic environment, bringing elements from their own practice forward into a piece of choreographic/ dance investigation.
The commission is an opportunity for an artist not to be bound by the form in which they currently work. The nature of the research is open; suggested research could:

Explore whether you have something to say that could be expressed in dance
Investigate what you consider to be dance
Reflect on how the processes of the choreographer, such as movement, rhythm, pattern and structure, are echoed in your own working practice.

The R&D project will start in February / March 2003. During this time the selected artist will spend one week in residence at Dance 4 in Nottingham and Yorkshire Dance in Leeds. The process will be concluded in Spring 2003 with the artist's presentation of findings and research documentation to the commissioning partners and an invited public. The findings can be presented in the artist's chosen format. At this stage, the artist can discuss the possibility of future project development with GUARDIANS OF DOUBT's commissioning partners. The 4000 commission is all-inclusive. It should cover all aspects of the project's budget including fees, travel and accommodation during residency periods, material and documentation expenses.

GUARDIANS OF DOUBT COMMISSION

GUARDIANS OF DOUBT are Arnolfini Live, Dance 4, Tramway and Yorkshire Dance. Established to investigate different approaches to dance, GoD believes in the freedom of thought and movement, unencumbered by form, disciplines or criteria. The consortium has received funding from the Arts Council of England's National Promoter Development Fund to support and expand our current programming work and strengthen ourselves as a network of presenters committed to supporting and investing in new forms of dance and performance on a national and international scale.

As a network we are interested in creating different environments where artists, producers and audiences can present ideas, test assumptions, express doubts and also get passionate about art. By doing this, we hope to bring greater openness and honesty to the process of making, presenting and receiving work.

Over the next 12 months we plan to:

Create a "commission of ideas" through which we invite international artists to develop work that can be tested and challenged before being committed to as a finished piece.
Create opportunities for UK based artists to undertake research and development, which could lead to the creation of finished work.
Develop education and audience development programmes with emphasis on dialogue and conversation
Produce the findings of our work through written articles, essays and personal responses
Research international work that could be suitable for programming and touring in the UK
Develop stronger links with other networks and venues in the UK and internationally, with the view to future collaboration
