Transgenic Sonic Fiction in Oldham
Celebrated critic, cultural commentator and DJ Kodwo Eshun will mark the
finale of the controversial biotechnological art show CleanRooms with a
free-wheeling talk about futuristic transgenic scenarios at Gallery Oldham,
Greater Manchester at 3.30 PM on Saturday November 30.
Eshun, author of the acclaimed More Brilliant Than the Sun - Adventures in
Sonic Fiction will outline the strategies of the artists - including the US
artist/activists Critical Art Ensemble - linking with his own work that
includes extensive lecturing on cultural studies and electronic culture.
Gallery Oldham is further animated by a series of one-off events throughout
the day from 2PM when Clean Rooms artists in residence Brandon Ballengee and
Ruth Ben-Tovim present the results of their residencies. New York artist
Brandon Ballengee's project From Farm to Pharm looks at humankind's
struggle for evolutionary dominance, and creates a time-line of animal and
plant evolution. Theatre director Ruth Ben-Tovim presents an interactive
performance installation about the kinds of changes we might like to make to
our anatomies. (Part of the Arts Council of England's Playgarden Initiative)
Kodwo Eshun's CleanRooms talk is free and open to everyone.
Organised by The Arts Catalyst, the science-art agency
Gallery Oldham, Greaves Street, (off Union street) Oldham Town Centre.
