the International Computer Music Association (ICMA).

Performing with Technology

Technology enables and facilitates modes of performance that would be
otherwise impossible or impractical. Often both research and exhibition
contexts emphasize technological development without commensurate
reflection on how such technology impacts upon performers -- does it
integrate with traditional performance practice, encourage evolution
thereof, or challenge conception of new performance frameworks necessary
to fulfil the promise of new tools? At what point does a tool become an
instrument? Is it more effective to customize an instrument for a
performer or force the performer to adapt to the instrument? Will there
ever be an electronic instrument comparable to the piano that everyone
learns how to play that remains relatively unchanged over generations, and
is expressive across a broad range of styles, genres, and aesthetics? Is
such a goal even still desirable? This issue aims to provoke and grapple
with such questions and any others that explore the relationship of
technology and musical _expression in a thoughtful and illuminating
context

This issue continues the annual partnership between Organised Sound and
the International Computer Music Association begun with Issue 7, No. 3:
"Interactivity". The ICMA has long been dedicated to bringing together
researchers, composers, and performers to chart the frontiers of music and
technology, but has been criticized for focusing more on theory than
practice. With the theme of "Performing with Technology" we hope to
balance the discourse by emphasizing the crucial role of performance in
the digital music present and future. This issue will be co-ordinated by
the ICMA Array Editor, Margaret Schedel, and Publications Co-ordinator,
John P. Young.

Suggested topics for exploration include:
Aesthetics of performing with technology
Interactive performance systems
Virtuosic / naive techniques
Digitally-enhanced acoustic instruments
Notation / dynamic score
Distributed group performance
Installation performance
Intermedia / collaborative performance
Dance / body as instrument
Alternative sound reproduction paradigms
Diffusion / spatialisation
Composer's studio as instrument
Laptop music / live remix / improvisation
Autonomous performance / A.I.
Environment / presentation

We invite submissions from composers, performers and researchers working
in the realm of digital performance. Submissions related to the theme are
encouraged, but those that fall outside the scope of this theme will also
receive consideration.

Deadline for submissions is 1 June 2003. Submissions may consist of
papers, with optional supporting short compositions or excerpts, and/or
audio-visual documentation of performances. Supporting audio and
audio-visual material will be presented as part of the journal's annual
CD-ROM which will appear with issue 8/3. Related discussion will be
located on the ICMA Array website, www.computermusic.org/array.php
(Americas) or
http://www.notam.uio.no/icma/array.php (Europe), and additional multimedia
material at the Cambridge University Press website.
