File Sound Art, aka artists Philip Duckworth and Ben Sadler, is a Midlands based art
project that has been in operation since 2000.
As part of the burgeoning experimental music scene in the Midlands, File has published
a regular series of audio CDs, providing an arena for artists working with sound. An
open submission policy has resulted in a diverse mix of work from artists and
musicians selected by File and then distributed via informal personal networks, the
internet, local record shops and art centres.
The work presented through File is wide ranging in production, location and content.
Spoken word, field recordings, computer generated sound, performance documentation,
disco and karaoke have all been taken under the File wing to be lovingly sent out into
the world.
File 05 is a Mead gallery special edition that reflects on facets of urban experience.
Pirate radio stations, lonely hearts columns and molotov cocktails are landmarks on an
aural highway navigating love, music, protest and the daily grind. The selection was
inspired by the Phoenix project, a series of major architectural and visual arts
commissions that seek to regenerate the post-war city centre of Coventry.
File 05 will be launched with a set by File Sound Art at Mead gallery on 17 January
2003, 6-8pm, during the opening of Elements by Susanna Heron and Ream by Sian Bowen.
Contributors to File 05 are: Circa 1988, Matt Golden, Karin Kihlberg, Paul Rooney,
Gwendolyn Rowlands, Colin Lowe and Roddy Thompson, Christian Nold and Duncan Whitley
and dj wrongspeed.
File is available from Mead Gallery, Coventry, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, Whitechapel
Gallery, London, ICA, London and www.palm90.com
The Mead Gallery is open 12 noon to 9pm Monday to Saturday. Entry is FREE.
