EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL in Osnabr�ck, Germany
>From April 23rd to 27th `Larger than Life� - is this year`s motto of one of Europe`s biggest multimedia events. From April 23rd to 27th the EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL (EMAF) in Osnabr�ck, Germany, invites experts of art, culture, economy, and a wide interested audience to get an overview of current trends and the latest developments in media art. Out of 1.600 entries the jury has compiled an exciting program that presents innovative creative ideas and projects. On display will be experimental films, videos, performances, multimedia installations, and innovative works of the field of digital media such as CD-ROM, DVD, and the internet. Genetic engineering already entered arts, the boundaries between genetic technology and the arts have blurred; `transgenetic arts� has become a familiar term. With its motto `Larger than Life� the EMAF has invited media artists to reflect the rapidly progressing development in (life) sciences. In addition to the prize of the German film critic, this year the `Werkleitz Award� for excellent digital media productions will be awarded. This years retrospective is dedicated to the works of influencial Canadian film maker Michael Snow, who was honored with special exhibition at the Centre Pompidou by the end of last year. Again the central location of the festival will be the exhibition at the `Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche�, where from April 23rd to May 18th video- and computer installations, media-sculptures, projections and interactive systems will be on display. In cooperation with the Erich-Maria-Remarque peace center the EMAF presents a European premiere: Colombian artist Manuel Echavarr�a, who already had an exhibition at the MoMA New York, reflects in his videos and installations the everyday violence of his war-torn country. One of the performance program`s highlights will be presented in the congress hall of the Stadthalle Osnabr�ck.. The Swiss project `Stage TV� is a unique combination of traditional circus performing and juggling with the possibilities offered by video techniques and computer animation.
