Not being able to be directly accessible, we can only view this environment via the window. This vitrine immediately alters our relationship with any image or object situated there, limiting our sensory perception and forcing us to rely heavily on what visual information we can gather. The distance from which the works can be viewed creates a further constraint. In many circumstances a detailed examination becomes impossible. As the location that Art is experienced in directly influences its impact, it seems important to allow any viewer to experience this space as wholly as possible. This gesture is to try to dissolve the centimetre barrier between gallery and street and to allow a physical understanding of the room. To attempt this there has to be a translation of information from one language to another. A conversion of aesthetic qualities to allow a physical comprehension. This change is from three-dimensional space into sound. Sound is simply vibrations, which makes it the most three-dimensional experience we can have. It is the movement of the atmosphere in waves that we understand as sound and if placed in an enclosed space it completely fills its volume. Synaesthesia is a condition where sensory perceptions become crossed. This can occur between any number of our five senses. For example, sounds can stimulate specific scents. To achieve this conversion of information I have employed various synaesthetic processes. Firstly a translation to image and secondly from image to sound. This creates an abstracted, but physical interpretation of the gallery space. The image and sound are shown together in the form of animation, which is projected from inside the space onto the window in an attempt to break down the prior function of the barrier. The work now exists not inside, but is the border itself. Photophonic references a previous intervention I made in the space - see first week of rooted project http://www.itchyfingers.org/emerged/rooted/sdickie.htm by including samples recorded during this time, Titled 'Invisible Inc.' it was design to perform a similar function as the work by breeching the barrier between inside and outside. A phone and answer machine were set up inside the space and reactions to the work were recorded and played back from inside the shop front. Resulting in casting the viewer into the interior.
