The Communications Act was passed in July of this year, which gives 'not for profit' community broadcasters access to the airwaves alongside the BBC and commercial operators.

Community radio is an effective medium for creative programming, minority languages, local information and discussion, and community development.

Community radio is cost effective and can bring people together as producers, but how do you deliver content which is good enough to compete for listeners, and keep them listening?

This event will highlight some exciting broadcasting projects which show different approaches to community radio, community participation and audience development.

The presentations:

Professor Anthony Everitt - community radio and cultural development

Javed Sattar - 'giving a voice' to the Asian community

Ed Baxter - contemporary music radio and radio art

John Harding - community radio from a local authority perspective

Bolt Radio Project - radio by and for young people

Ewan McVicar - on community radio and social action

HIFCB - community radio in the Highlands and Islands

Tom Lousada - on streaming, broadcasting and programming community radio
