Edinburgh Mediabase Training Programme Nov-Dec 2003

 

Digital Video Tasters - (5 evenings)
The ideal introduction for those with little or no experience of digital
filmmaking. The course takes you through the complete production process
from concept to screen, using digital cameras and non-linear editing
software.. "Hands on, practical and relevant". Evening course which runs for
five weeks 6 - 9pm.
JANUARY: Course begins: Monday 5th
Band 1: �60 / Band 2: �80 / Band 3: �100

Tutor: Keith Bowman - Technical trainer at Edinburgh College of Art and
celebrating 20 years in the moving image industry during 2003.

Canon XL1
Tutorial on Canon's award winning, highly versatile camcorder. Course
introduces the features of the XL1, theory and practice of using digital
video, 6-9pm.
DECEMBER: Monday 1st 
Band 1: �25 / Band 2: �30 / Band 3: �35

Sony DSR500WS
Tutorial to the versatile, widescreen broadcast quality camera and Sony's
DVCAM digital tape format. Course covers the camera's extensive range of
features and advanced image manipulation options. Suitable for those with
some dv  experience, 6-9pm.
DECEMBER: Tuesday 2nd 
Band 1: �30 / Band 2: �35 /  Band 3: �40

16mm Camera Assistant
Introduction to Aaton's16mm film camera and ARRI's SRII , the basic
procedures of cinematography and the role of the camera assistant. The
course covers loading film, lenses, film stock and light exposures. Two
night course, 6 - 9pm.
DECEMBER: Monday 8th & Tuesday 9th 
Band 1: �40 / Band 2: �50 / Band 3: �60

Lighting
Workshop covers key lighting issues including: contrast, quality, direction,
intensity, colour temperature, gels, safety and 3 point lighting. Emphasis
on practical problem solving techniques for drama and documentary. Two night
course, 6pm - 9pm.  
DECEMBER: Monday 15th & Tuesday 16th 
Band 1: �40 / Band 2: �50 / Band 3: �60

Location Sound Recording 
Introduction to a range of location sound recording equipment, and training
in its use and value in different sound recording situations. Two night
course, 6pm - 9pm. 
NOVEMBER: Tuesday 4th & Wednesday 5th
DECEMBER: Thursday 4th & Friday 5th
Band 1: �35 / Band 2: �40 / Band 3: �50

Tutor: Jonnie Burnett - filmmaker with background in audio recording and
music production.

Documentary Workshop 
This workshop will follow through the whole process of documentary making
from initial idea to final output. Course includes practical camera work and
instruction on how to shoot without manipulating the subject. Weekend
course, 10am to 5pm.  
NOVEMBER: Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th 
Band 1: �60 / Band 2: �80 / Band 3: �100

Tutor: Gail Frater - Lecturer in Audio Visual Studies at Stevenson College.
Broadcast history includes 5 X 30" documentaries for BBC1 EX-S series and 6
X 10" documentaries for BBC Choice. 

Working with Actors 
Weekend workshop for directing actors. Covers a wide range of creative
processes and techniques by which directors can work from a script to
performance. Participants will be taught theatrical techniques which can be
used to great effect in film direction to get the best performances from
actors. The second day will be spent exploring these methods with
professional actors. The course does not involve camera work.

Tutor: Fiona Walton - 14 years in professional theatre. Directed over 42
productions. Now working directing tv drama for BBC

Script Writing
Introduction to the script writing process: how to develop an idea into a
completed script, with focus on short film narrative drama. Aim is for
students to emerge inspired and armed to begin writing short film
screenplays. Feedback and analysis for works-in-progress and completed
scripts. Run over two Saturdays.   
DECEMBER: Saturday 13th & Saturday 20th
Band 1: �50 / Band 2: �65 / Band 3: �80

Tutor: Nigel Smith - Experienced short film writer and producer. Producer
for multi award winning Cry for Bobo. 

Producing a Short Film
The workshop will lead your through the whole process of producing a low
budget short from idea to script to screen to marketing and distribution.
NOVEMBER: Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd 
Band 1: �60 / Band 2: � 80 / Band 3: �100

Tutor: Rebecca Knapp - experienced producer of over 20 short films.

i-Movie
An entry level computer editing package. The course involves hands on
practical exercises and is the ideal budget editing solution, 6-9pm.     
NOVEMBER: Friday 21st
DECEMBER: Friday 19th
Band 1: �25 / Band 2: �30 / Band 3: �35

Final Cut Pro on Apple G4 PowerBook
Apple's groundbreaking editing system specifically tailored for use with
digital video. System has incredible graphics capabilities delivering
professional results 10am - 5pm        
DECEMBER: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th
Band 1: �70 / Band 2: �90 / Band 3: �110

Final Cut Pro Advanced
Follow up course exploring the extended possibilities of the powerful
editing system. Advanced topics to be covered include motion effects, colour
effects, keyframing, video filters and DVD authoring. 
NOVEMBER: Sunday 23rd
Band 1: �40 / Band 2: �50 / Band 3: �60

Avid Editing: 2 Day Course
Non-linear editing on industry standard Avid editing system. 
10am -5pm. 
DECEMBER: Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th
Band 1: �70 / Band 2: �100 / Band 3: �130

Editing Tutor: Tadhg O'Sullivan - Former technician at Galway Film Centre.
Freelance editor. Experienced with Discrete Logic edit, Avid Film Composer,
Final Cut pro, 16mm and 35mm film.

How to turn your bright ideas into a successful business. One day workshop
covers intellectual property rights, accounting, funding, marketing,
business plans, cashflow 
and networking. 10am to 5pm

Tutor: Ian Crook - Creative entrepreneur, Managing Director 4 Minute Wonders
Ltd, Management Consultant and Screenwriter

Digital Audio Post Production
This course will be offered weekly over five evenings to provide a full
practical experience of the process of Audio Post Production including;
Production Dialogue Editing, Sound Effects Editing and Design, Foley
Recording, Music Editing, Mixing and Mastering.
6.15 - 9.15pm

Band 1: �60 / Band 2: �80 /  Band 3: �100

Tutor: John Williamson - composer/musician, audio production specialist and
teacher working in film, theatre, radio, electronic media and in the music
industry. 

Visual Narrative
This 2-day course will look at how to "show and not tell" the story.
Students will learn how to construct a story specific to the moving image
medium, master film making techniques and put it all together to tell an
effective story on film.

Tutor: Douglas Dougan - Freelance film journalist and analyst. Teaches Film,
Media and Scriptwriting at Edinburgh University. Organiser of Edinburgh
Screenwriters Group that meets every month in Mediabase.

how does the "band" price structure work?

Prices for Mediabase training courses, equipment and membership are divided
in to three separate categories depending on status/ income. 

Membership fees and definition of bands are as follows:
band 1    �12 / unwaged, student or unfunded community group
band 2    �20 / funded community group or low waged
band 3  �30 / commercial or high waged
